Holi (Holika Dahan)

Holi is one of the most joyful festivals celebrated in India. It is known as the Festival of Colors and is loved by children and adults alike. Holi usually comes in the month of March and marks the arrival of spring.

🔥 What is Holika Dahan?

Before the colorful celebrations begin, people celebrate Holika Dahan. On this evening, families gather around a big bonfire. This fire reminds us that good always wins over evil.

📖 The Story Behind Holika Dahan

Long ago, there was a king named Hiranyakashipu. He wanted everyone to worship only him. But his son, Prahlada, was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu.

The king became very angry and tried to punish Prahlada. He asked his sister, Holika, who had a magical shawl that protected her from fire, to sit in a fire with Prahlada.

But something amazing happened! The magical shawl flew from Holika and covered Prahlada instead. Holika burned in the fire, and Prahlada was saved because of his faith and goodness.

That is why we light a bonfire on Holika Dahan — to remember that truth and goodness always win.

🎨 The Next Day – Rangwali Holi

The day after Holika Dahan is full of colors! Children and families:

  • Play with colored powders (gulal)
  • Splash water
  • Eat sweets like gujiya
  • Sing and dance together

It is a day of happiness, laughter, and forgiveness.
